GST on gym memberships in India: what gym owners should know
13 October 2026 · 5 min read · By FitnessDesk
This article is a general overview, not tax advice. GST rules change and depend on your turnover and state, so confirm the details with your chartered accountant.
Is GST charged on gym memberships?
Yes. Services provided by gyms and fitness centres are generally taxable under GST at 18%. Yoga and certain other services have different treatment, so check how your specific services are classified.
When do you need to register?
Registration is generally required once your aggregate turnover from services crosses the prescribed threshold, which differs for some states. Some gyms also register voluntarily to claim input tax credit on equipment and rent. Your accountant can tell you which applies to you.
What a GST invoice should include
- Your gym's name, address and GSTIN
- A unique, sequential invoice number and date
- The member's name (and GSTIN if applicable)
- Description of the service, such as the plan name and period
- Taxable value, the rate and the tax amount
- Total payable
Why sequential numbering matters
Invoices should follow a continuous sequence without gaps. Handwritten receipts and spreadsheets make this easy to get wrong. Software that numbers invoices automatically removes the risk and gives you an audit trail.
Keeping records in order
- Record every payment, whatever the payment mode.
- Keep invoices and expenses together for the filing period.
- Export collections reports for your accountant each month.
How software helps
FitnessDesk generates numbered, GST-ready invoices automatically when you record a payment, and its collections and profit reports give your accountant clean figures at month-end. Always have your accountant review the settings for your own registration.
